What it's actually like

Tree-lined doglegs, water, sand, and elevated tees and greens, on a piece of land that reads as conservation park with a golf course laid through it rather than the other way round. The creek is a constant presence.

The hole people talk about is the third: a par five that doglegs twice, cut through the trees.

A genuine distinction

In 1995 it became the first municipal golf course to be fully certified under the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary programme. That is not marketing language — it is why the place still feels like habitat rather than manicured turf, and it is a reasonable part of why the neighbourhood around it looks the way it does.

The history, briefly

The course predates the neighbourhood named after it, which is a nice inversion. More on that in who built Peel Village.

Correction

Stanley Thompson did not design this course

You will see it claimed. Thompson — Banff Springs, Jasper Park, Cape Breton Highlands — is a large name to attach to a municipal nine. The Stanley Thompson Society's own records credit his firm with renovation design on two holes, not with designing the course.

It's a better story straight than embellished.

The unhelpful truth

It is nine holes. If you want eighteen, this isn't it, and the golfers who complain about that in reviews are not wrong — they're just at the wrong course. What it is instead is a walkable, unpretentious, genuinely pretty municipal nine that you can play after work without a membership, five minutes from most of Peel Village.

For a lot of people who live here, that is a better thing than a championship layout an hour away.
